Hi, man, you're very quick!

How did you menage to add DeepSkyPedia so soon after I instaled SMW???

Well, I hate to give away all my secrets, :) but I found it on the SMW Registry, which I check from time to time - it usually has sites pretty quickly after they come online. Yaron Koren 21:17, July 5, 2010 (UTC)

Just saw what happened in the meantime

Hi Yaron, this is so sad. What a waste of time. :( A range block is always a drastic measure but it was the only option. Cheers --[[kgh]] 05:16, April 8, 2012 (EDT)

Yeah, definitely. I hope it wasn't too drastic... we'll see if anyone from Canada (that's where the IP range is) complains. Yaron Koren 21:40, April 8, 2012 (EDT)
Hey, thanks for giving the answer away. :) Just kidding - anyway, a better CAPTCHA wouldn't help in this particular situation, since I assume there's a person behind it. But that $wgRateLimits looks quite helpful - I wasn't aware of that setting before. I just added it to the settings; hopefully it'll improve the situation. Yaron Koren 09:41, April 12, 2012 (EDT)
Just came back from a holiday break. :( I wish people would use their brain to do something productive to honour life. Nothing left to say, except that the next step would probably be ConfirmAccount. Cheers --[[kgh]] 11:40, April 13, 2012 (EDT)
Though ReCaptcha cannot stop live people, it slows them down.

Kghbln - yeah, I agree. Disabling account creation would be a drastic step, but maybe it's necessary... Alex Mashin - I don't think a different CAPTCHA would make any difference for vandalism; a person only needs to pass it once to register, and then they're free to vandalize as many pages as they want. Yaron Koren 20:25, April 14, 2012 (EDT)
You don't understand. You can configure captcha as well as rate limits to apply to new or, better, non-autopatrolled accounts, not only amonymous users; and you can redefine (mw:Manual:$wgAutoConfirmAge and mw:Manual:$wgAutoConfirmCount) "new account". Disabling account creation not only would be a drastic step, it is unnecessary. As long as anti-vandalism protection is concerned, there is little difference between logged-in and anonymous users.

Oh, yes - I forgot about the newbie accounts/auto-confirm thing. That's a good idea. Yaron Koren 18:59, April 15, 2012 (EDT)
